SPF vs PA: What’s the Difference and Why You Need Both

Sun protection labels can be confusing, but understanding SPF and PA is essential for proper skin protection.

What SPF Means
SPF (Sun Protection Factor) measures protection against UVB rays, which are responsible for sunburn and surface-level skin damage. Higher SPF means longer protection, but no sunscreen blocks 100% of UVB rays.

What PA Means
PA measures protection against UVA rays. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin and are the primary cause of premature aging, wrinkles, and dark spots. PA is often shown as PA+, PA++, PA+++, or PA++++, with more plus signs indicating stronger protection.

Why Both Matter
Using a product that only focuses on SPF without UVA protection leaves skin vulnerable to long-term damage. Broad-spectrum protection ensures defense against both immediate and invisible sun damage.
